Disney Princess Moment

So this was basically me checking my email last Friday morning*, a simple task that turned out to be what is undoubtedly the single most poignant moment of my life thus far.

You’re looking at Ryerson University’s newest Fashion Communications student! Yep, I got accepted into a program that I’ve been dreaming about since childhood, at a school I’ve been talking about non-stop for years, in the city my whole being yearns to be in–and you know what? It feels so damn amazing!

I’m glad that the hours I’ve spent daydreaming about working in the fashion industry wasn’t a total waste of time; that the years I’ve spent doodling runway models, plowing through sewing projects, and memorizing the who’s-who of fashion was time well spent. The insane amount of effort I’ve put into my portfolio has finally paid off, and I’ve finally reached my goal!

I’d call this my Disney Princess moment and leave it at that, but it’s not that simple. Unlike Cinderella, Ariel or Snow White, I didn’t enlist in the help of a fairy godmother, sea witch or team of seven dwarves to reach my “happy ending”. The thing is, Disney magic is irrelevant in real life; I’ve found that if you really want something, you need determination, optimism and a hell of a lot of hard work, not luck or dependence on other people.

And anyways, this isn’t my happy ending, it’s just the beginning. Watch out Toronto, come Fall 2012, I’m coming for you!
